Infant Milestones: What to Expect in the First Year

Every parent wants to know: is my baby on track? The truth is, development varies enormously from child to child — and that’s completely normal. What follows is a general guide to what most babies experience in their first year. Think of it as a map, not a checklist.

0–3 Months

  • Begins to smile socially (in response to your face)
  • Follows moving objects with eyes
  • Responds to sounds; startles at loud noises
  • Lifts head briefly during tummy time
  • Begins to coo and make vowel sounds

4–6 Months

  • Rolls from tummy to back (then back to tummy)
  • Reaches for and grasps objects
  • Sits with support; may begin sitting independently
  • Laughs and squeals; babbles with consonant sounds
  • Recognizes familiar faces; may show stranger awareness

7–9 Months

  • Sits independently
  • Starts to crawl (some babies skip this entirely — that’s okay)
  • Develops pincer grasp (thumb and forefinger)
  • Says “mama” and “dada” (not necessarily with meaning yet)
  • Plays peek-a-boo; understands object permanence

10–12 Months

  • Pulls to stand; may cruise along furniture
  • First steps may appear (anywhere from 9–15 months is normal)
  • Says 1–3 words with meaning
  • Waves bye-bye; points to objects
  • Understands simple instructions (“give me that”)

When to Talk to Your Pediatrician

Every child develops at their own pace, but some signs warrant a conversation with your doctor: not making eye contact by 3 months, no babbling by 9 months, no words by 16 months, or loss of skills they previously had. Early intervention is always better than waiting.

At Little Sprouts, our infant teachers track developmental milestones as part of daily care and communicate regularly with families. Learn more about our infant program or schedule a tour to see our infant rooms in person.
